The Open Society Conference (2018)
Summary

The 2018 Open Society Conference (OSC) organized by the Faculty of Law, Social, and Political Sciences (FHISIP), Universitas Terbuka, addresses the theme “Social and Political Challenges in the Industrial Revolution 4.0.” The conference highlights the growing importance of understanding the opportunities and challenges brought by rapid technological developments that characterize the fourth industrial revolution.

Industrial Revolution 4.0 is driven by advanced technologies such as the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, machine learning, robotics, 3D printing, nanotechnology, and biotechnology. Compared with previous industrial revolutions, this transformation is broader, faster, and more complex due to the convergence of multiple technologies. While these advancements offer significant opportunities for development and innovation, they also create complex risks and challenges.

Among the major concerns are the increasing threat of cybercrime due to higher connectivity, potential job losses caused by automation across various industries, and the possibility of widening social and economic inequality. These developments may also reshape existing social and political structures. Therefore, governments and institutions are encouraged to increase public awareness of technological change, provide broader access to technology, and develop responsive policies and regulations to address emerging challenges.

The rapid expansion of information and communication technology, particularly the widespread use of social media, has also transformed how individuals communicate, access information, and participate in social and political processes. These disruptive changes require societies and policymakers to adapt to new realities in the digital era.

To explore these issues, the conference provides an academic platform for discussion through several sub-themes, including information and political literacy, language and social change, digital citizenship, governance and leadership in the digital era, social media as political education, inequality and social justice, and the digital divide in democratic processes. The conference aims to generate constructive ideas and scholarly contributions to better understand and respond to the social and political challenges emerging in the era of Industrial Revolution 4.0.
